The AI company is rolling out visual advertisements within ChatGPT, introducing image-based promotions that will display while users create images. Testing of this new ad format is set to begin later this month across the United States, starting with a limited advertiser base.
The visual ad approach allows brands to leverage imagery for demonstrating product features, usage scenarios, or service-related experiences, providing a more graphical promotional channel within the platform. OpenAI stated that "Initially, we'll test this new ad format during image generation in ChatGPT. Ads will be clearly labeled, and remain separate from the image being created."
The company emphasized that advertising placements do not affect the accuracy or objectivity of ChatGPT's responses. With the platform now serving 1.2 billion users weekly, ads represent an additional revenue stream for OpenAI beyond paid subscription tiers.

Measurement and Brand Safety Infrastructure
Concurrent with the visual ad rollout, OpenAI is deploying enhanced measurement capabilities for advertisers to track whether ChatGPT ads drive actual purchases or other desired outcomes. The company is partnering with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp to access conversion data.
Attribution tracking now involves AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, Kochava, and additional partners. For brand safety evaluation, OpenAI is collaborating with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, a particularly critical consideration given that advertisements appear alongside user conversations rather than traditional web pages.
OpenAI has implemented safeguards designed to prevent ads from appearing in conversations involving emotional vulnerability, sensitive topics, or other unsuitable contexts. The company assures that independent verification partners will not access private user conversations while assessing the effectiveness of these protective measures.
Though the visual ad experiment remains confined to the United States at present, OpenAI's trajectory suggests advertising will become increasingly central to its monetization strategy as it seeks to generate revenue from its massive user base.
