Autonomous System Provider Authorizations (ASPAs) represent a new addition to the Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) toolkit, designed to let network operators verify BGP AS paths and spot route leaks by confirming authorized provider-customer relationships.

APNIC rolled out ASPA object support across MyAPNIC and its Registry API in July, giving members the ability to declare their upstream provider relationships through the registry directly.

Why ASPAs matter

RPKI and ROV have substantially raised confidence in route origins by letting operators confirm whether an AS holds authorization to advertise a given IP prefix.

ROV alone, however, does not check the path that routing information follows as it crosses the Internet backbone.

ASPAs bridge this gap by enabling ASes to declare their authorized provider relationships. Using this data, operators can check AS paths, spot route leaks, flag routing irregularities, and strengthen trust in routing information arriving from peer networks.

As more operators deploy and adopt ASPAs, they are emerging as a key element of routing security strategies and operational standards.
