OpenAI is integrating Work features directly into its standard Chat experience while establishing a shared usage pool for both Chat and Codex services, according to communications reviewed by BleepingComputer. The company plans to pilot a merged Chat and Work interface in the coming weeks with an initial cohort of users before broader rollout.

Users selected for the test will transition between exploratory conversations and production tasks without needing to switch between separate interfaces. OpenAI stated that "This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place."

The unified experience allows subscribers to "bring in your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work," according to OpenAI. The pilot will expand to additional users following initial testing, though Codex will continue operating as a standalone application within the ChatGPT desktop client.

Unified usage limits and doubled allowances

Pro subscribers will now see Chat and Codex draw from a combined quota rather than separate limits. OpenAI noted that "Your use of ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same allowance."

Not all interactions consume the shared allowance. OpenAI includes Unlimited Instant at no additional cost against the usage cap. More demanding models and resource-intensive operations will deplete the allowance at varying rates based on computational requirements.

Subscribers can monitor combined remaining quota and reset schedules through Settings > Usage. When the allowance exhausts, users may wait for the next reset cycle, upgrade their subscription tier, or buy additional credits for supported features.

OpenAI has already increased Work and Codex allowances for Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 tiers effective October 29, doubling the previous limits for these subscription levels.
