Starting October 2nd, 2026, GitHub will discontinue support for certain models within GitHub Copilot across all deployment scenarios, spanning Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions. Teams relying on these models must transition their workflows and integrations to supported alternatives ahead of the sunset date. For Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Business deployments, administrators will need to grant access to replacement models by adjusting model policies within Copilot settings.
Administrator Steps
Administrators should check their organization or enterprise Copilot model settings to confirm which models remain available and ensure the relevant policy is activated for the desired model. Once a model policy is enabled, team members will be able to select it from the model picker within Copilot Chat and other supported GitHub Copilot interfaces.
After the October 2nd, 2026 deadline passes, no manual intervention is needed to remove the deprecated models from systems.
GitHub Enterprise account holders with questions should reach out to their dedicated account representative. Additional details on available models can be found in GitHub's model documentation, and users are invited to share input via the GitHub Community forum.
