Anthropic is unifying its Claude product line by merging separate Chat and Cowork interfaces into one conversation-based workspace. The shift aims to solve a persistent friction point: users having to decide upfront which mode to use for their task. Beginning Wednesday, a single interface will handle everything from simple queries to complex multi-step projects with connected tools and background execution.
The company is simultaneously launching Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta on paid plans, while folding Claude Design—previously a standalone workspace—directly into conversations. The combined changes let Claude automatically route work based on context rather than forcing users to pick the right product first.
Eliminating the routing bottleneck
Anthropic introduced Cowork as a desktop-first agent for larger projects and Design as a separate visual workspace earlier this year, both gaining user adoption. However, feedback consistently pointed to the same problem: deciding which tool belonged to which task. "We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work," Anthropic said in its announcement. "People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged."
This complaint echoes earlier friction around product boundaries. When Anthropic promoted its Max plan with claims of 20x increased usage, developers pushed back hardest not on capability gaps but on unclear product limits and where features lived. Context switching between modes compounded the problem—notes from a chat session wouldn't automatically appear in a Cowork task, and Design projects started fresh even after lengthy setup conversations. Anthropic partially addressed this in August by unifying Claude's memory across chat and Cowork. Wednesday's merge takes the integration further by eliminating the products' separation entirely.
Context and capabilities now travel together
Cowork's feature set—local file access, multi-step execution, scheduled tasks, and connected tools—now operates within the conversation interface itself. Previously, workflows required switching from chat to Cowork and manually carrying context along. Until Anthropic brought Cowork to web and mobile in July, users also needed the desktop application.
Claude maintains its default behavior of asking before executing actions, but users can configure it to continue working autonomously and only interrupt when judgment is needed. Recurring tasks like weekly reports can be scheduled to run on a fixed cadence—such as every Monday—without manual triggering each time.
Documents and slides stay in context
Claude Docs and Claude Slides enter beta on paid tiers, letting users write, edit, and generate documents directly within the application. Slides can be created from conversation content, edited in-app, presented live from Claude, or exported as PowerPoint or PDF files. "The practical benefit is that a report and a slide deck based on it don't have to begin as separate jobs with the same background supplied twice."
Claude Design remains available as a standalone option while also functioning within conversations. For organizations using MCP connectors to integrate Claude with external systems and data sources, the consolidation means those connections work across all conversation types without requiring users to start in a specific mode. Skills, connectors, and artifacts now traverse what were previously hard product boundaries.
Unanswered questions and migration concerns
Anthropic's announcement leaves several details unspecified. It does not clarify whether users can force requests to remain in simple chat mode rather than allowing Claude to determine handling, or how that choice affects context windows and token usage. API changes receive no mention, suggesting this is a consumer and team product shift rather than a platform-level change for now.
The company also hasn't addressed the fate of workflows built around the old separation. Shopify famously rebuilt its mobile development stack in 12 weeks when consolidating divergent tools—Claude power users face a similar question about whether existing Cowork setups, skills, and scheduled tasks migrate cleanly. Anthropic confirms that existing Cowork chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills will remain accessible.
Rollout timeline
The unified interface begins rolling out to Pro and Max users across web, desktop, and mobile over the coming weeks, with no configuration required. Team and Free plan users follow afterward. Enterprise customers operate on a separate schedule, with Anthropic providing administrators at least 30 days' advance notice before the change reaches their organizations.
