Overview
Amazon S3 on Outposts provides object storage directly within on-premises AWS Outposts deployments, addressing local data processing and data residency compliance. The service leverages standard S3 APIs and capabilities to simplify storage, encryption, tagging, retrieval, reporting, and access control for data residing on your Outpost. AWS Outposts itself is a fully managed offering that brings AWS infrastructure, services, and tools to nearly any data center, colocation facility, or on-premises location, delivering a consistent hybrid cloud experience.
Beyond meeting data residency obligations, S3 on Outposts addresses latency-sensitive workloads by positioning data near on-premises applications. The offering introduces a dedicated Amazon S3 storage class called 'S3 Outposts', which employs the same S3 APIs while providing durable, redundant storage across multiple devices and servers within your Outposts infrastructure. Storage capacity options range from 26 TB, 48 TB, 96 TB, 240 TB, to 380 TB (note that the 26 TB option requires Outposts configured with at least 11 TB of EBS). Each AWS account can provision up to 100 buckets per Outpost. AWS DataSync, the data migration service for AWS Storage services, integrates with S3 on Outposts, allowing automated data movement between your Outposts and AWS Regions with granular control over transfer scope, timing, and bandwidth consumption.
