Starting September 1, 2026, GitHub has removed support for certain language models across the majority of Copilot's feature set. The affected services span Copilot Chat, inline editing capabilities, ask functionality, agent modes, and code completion tools. An exception exists for Claude Sonnet 4.6, which continues to be offered exclusively to individual subscribers maintaining annual billing arrangements.
Users operating within Copilot Enterprise environments should take steps to transition their existing setups and third-party connections to currently supported alternatives. Enterprise administrators may be required to grant access to replacement models by adjusting model policies within the Copilot configuration interface. Administrators can verify which models remain accessible by reviewing their own Copilot settings and ensuring the relevant policy permissions are activated for each desired model. Once a model receives approval through policy settings, it becomes selectable in the Copilot Chat model dropdown menu within VS Code and at github.com. The deprecated models will disappear automatically without requiring manual deletion.
